About the event
Sheffield is honored to receive Harvard Musical Association's 2023 George Henschel Community Award. HMA members will enjoy a special performance of our season finale, "...a small, makeshift place," followed by a reception with the players and composer Kenji Bunch.
This program, titled after Béla Bartók’s description of the cabin in the Adirondacks where he lived and wrote music during the last summer of his life, examines each of our deep-seated need to find our voice. Bartók’s String Quartet No. 1 in A Minor appears on the program with two other string quartets: Franz Schubert‘s “Quartettsatz,” a single movement from an unfinished quartet; and a newly-commissioned work by acclaimed American composer Kenji Bunch, the much-anticipated second installment in Sheffield's 5-year commissioning project.
