About the event
Overture to Spring: A Black History Month Family Concert will be the a fun and kid-friendly celebration of Black artistry presented by Sheffield Chamber Players and City Strings United. Jamaica Plain based Sheffield Chamber Players (SCP) has for eleven years worked to use high level chamber music as tool to build greater connection in our local communities, while Roxbury based City Strings United (CSU) was founded in 2012 with a mission for youth development in historically excluded communities through high quality music education.
The concert will open with the CSU students presenting selections from their current work And will lead into a set from SCP, featuring accessible and family-friendly selections by black composers throughout western history, including Joseph de Bologne, Margaret Bonds, Hawa Diabaté, Jessie Montgomery, and Daniel Bernard Roumain.
